Above all, he is under the great, restricting disability of the faker: he cannot do anything unDickensian. He has not taken space enough to do anything deeply complicated. We know in advance, from Edward Blishen’s Introduction, that he is not going to do anything outrageous. Mr Garfield is better at the manner (his are the middle two quotations above, the first and the fourth being from Dickens’s text) than at the plot. There has been rain this afternoon, and a wintry shudder goes among the little pools on the cracked, uneven flag-stones, and through the giant elm-trees as they shed a gust of tears. Once in London, where, as usual, the summer is unseasonably warm, and leaden, as if everybody has breathed out and nobody wants to breathe in, she proceeds. Ordinarily this animal - the property of the watchman and known, for sufficient reason, as Snap - was of a voracious, biting disposition but in Vacation time lapsed into a fly-blown apathy, like the law itself, as if all unlawful appetites were but a source of dreamy speculation. Try these four in a blindfold test:Īs though he had been called into existence, like a fabulous Familiar, by a magic spell which had failed when required to dismiss him, he stuck tight to Mr Grewgious’s stool, although Mr Grewgious’s comfort and convenience would manifestly have been advanced by dispossessing him. Elsewhere Mr Garfield’s narrative, in contrast to his dialogue, which is on the awkward side, is a forgery good enough, I should guess, to deceive. The outright blots in the Garfield text consist of two howlers in syntax: ‘His thoughts were still partly with Rosa, and with she of whom Rosa was an ever-present reminder’ and ‘And Rosa, what of she?’ Dickens was not an elegant syntactician, but I don’t think he would have let his narrative do that. But he runs (in the format of this edition) only to 122 pages, whereas Dickens occupies 201. To fulfil Dickens’s design, he should have supplied the same amount of text (equal to six numbers) as Dickens did. Perhaps at the dictate of publishing economics, he falls far shorter than Dickens did. Leon Garfield has opted for the diffident method of completion and has produced an honourable and, where style is concerned, mainly plausible fake. The last was two pages short - the second time, during Drood, that he was failed by the as it were ‘ring sense’ he had by then reliably cultivated for writing to an exact length. The more pleasurable suspense that serial publication generated in the consumers (except Queen Victoria, who didn’t take up Dickens’s offer to disclose Drood to her earlier than to her subjects) has now passed to television, leaving to novelists the peace of mind and the diffidence that come from knowing that thousands of readers are nothanging on your next instalment. (Presumably nothing had, in fact, to be repaid, since John Forster recorded that 50,000 copies were sold ‘while the author yet lived’.) The clause shows that Dickens knew he might be dying, but it is also witness to his splendid confidence that nothing short of death or a stroke could stop him composing the intended dozen monthly numbers. In his contract for Drood Dickens for the first time had a clause inserted providing for arbitration on how much of the up-front money (£7,500 to cover the first 25,000 copies) should be repaid ‘if the said Charles Dickens shall die’ or be otherwise incapacitated ‘during the composition of the said work’. On the strength of nothing less could they have committed themselves to serial publication in the nerve-stretching form it then took. The novelists, by contrast, had the nerve of the devil. During most of Dickens’s mature lifetime it was architecture that versed itself in pastiche and would scarcely venture out except under the veil and justification of some ‘historical’ style. In this respect, the arts have swopped places. But the mini-vogue among writers (or is it among publishers?) for endings to fictions that their authors left unfinished during the 19th century has not thrown up a single modern-dress production. Such a course would nowadays come naturally or at any rate fashionably to an architect were he required to complete a building that had stopped short in 1870. The boldest way to supply the missing second half of Edwin Drood would be in the idiom of the present time. One study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the gender wage gap is not the result of gender discrimination, but rather the result of differences in education, experience, and career choices made by men and women. By overemphasizing the outcome without examining the events leading up to it, the wage gap debate becomes a classic case of outcome bias. Advocates of the wage gap often point to the disparity between the median earnings of men and women, without considering other factors such as job tenure, experience, education, and other individual characteristics that may contribute to wage differences. The outcome bias can also play a role in the discourse surrounding the wage gap. This shows how the outcome bias can interfere with the objective and evidence-based decision making that is necessary for quality patient care. The study showed that doctors were more likely to prescribe a certain treatment if the outcome of the previous patient was positive, even if the previous patient had different symptoms and medical history than the current patient. This is an example of how the outcome bias can cloud people's judgment and cause them to focus on the final result rather than the actual process and performance of the player.Īnother study found that the outcome bias can affect the decision-making process of doctors and healthcare providers. A study looking at the evaluation of football players' performance by coaches and journalists found that players' performance is judged to be substantially better-over a whole match-if the player had a lucky goal rather than an unlucky miss (after a player's shot hit one of the goal posts). Outside of psychological experiments, the outcome bias has been found to be substantially present in real world situations. To avoid the influence of outcome bias, one would evaluate a decision by ignoring information collected after the fact and focusing on what the right answer is, or was at the time the decision was made. The reason why an individual makes this mistake is that he or she will incorporate currently available information when evaluating a past decision. " The ends justify the means" is an often used aphorism to express the Outcome effect when the outcome is desirable. Those presented with bad outcomes rated the decision worse than those who had good outcomes. Subjects were presented with either a good or bad outcome (in this case living or dying), and asked to rate the quality of the surgeon's pre-operation decision. The surgery had a known probability of success. One such example involved a surgeon deciding whether or not to do a risky surgery on a patient. Individuals whose judgments are influenced by outcome bias are seemingly holding decision-makers responsible for events beyond their control.īaron and Hershey (1988) presented subjects with hypothetical situations in order to test this. The actual outcome of the decision will often be determined by chance, with some risks working out and others not. This is an error because no decision-maker ever knows whether or not a calculated risk will turn out for the best. One will often judge a past decision by its ultimate outcome instead of based on the quality of the decision at the time it was made, given what was known at that time. Hindsight bias focuses on memory distortion to favor the actor, while the outcome bias focuses exclusively on weighting the past outcome heavier than other pieces of information in deciding if a past decision was correct. While similar to the hindsight bias, the two phenomena are markedly different. Unlike hindsight bias, outcome bias does not involve the distortion of past events. Outcome bias does not involve analysis of factors that lead to a previous event, and instead de-emphasizes the events preceding the outcomes and overemphasizes the outcome. This error arises when a decision is based on the outcome of previous events, without regard to how the past events developed. Outcome Bias, also known as the Disparity Fallacy and Equity Fallacy, is a form of confirmation bias, and by extension a cognitive bias. If you do not have SCAL 2, then you have to download it. However, in order to cut correctly, a valid key file is required.įor this method, we will move you through utilizing an older version of the program software, Sure Cuts A Lot Cricut 2. Others previously utilized the discontinued Craft Room software and are looking for something else that could work. Many people think it does not work for a longer time and that they were forced to utilize Cricut’s Design Space for their designs. I find various types of questions about how I use Sure Cuts A Lot with Cricut devices. "Fresh up your Eclipse with super-awesome color themes!" In the meantime, only for editors though (which isn't what you want but still merit to be mentioned): (see dynamic css with e4 or A week at e4 – Themeing in e4): Note that a full dark theme will be possible with e4. Komododave mentions that you don't always need a plugin: see " Ubuntu + Eclipse 4.2 - Dark theme - How to darken sidebar backgrounds?" for an example, based on gtkrc resource. Pixeldude mentions in the comments having publish "Dark Juno" on GitHub! If you export your plug-in, place it in the “dropins” folder of your Eclipse installation and your styling is available. If you want to play with it, you only need to write a plug-in, create a CSS file and use the 4.ui. extension point to point to your file. I have seen one! (Ie, a fully dark theme for Eclipse), as reported by Lars Vogel in " Eclipse 4 is beautiful – Create your own Eclipse 4 theme": New language is not necessary just for this kind of purpose. It proves that again, the concise codes and advanced features could be achieved by contributing or extending with the external form(like library, framework). The big fun is that, the codes are minimized by using Eclipse4 platform technologies like dependency injection. The blog post " Jin Mingjian: Eclipse Darker Theme" mentions this GitHub repo " eclipse themes - darker": It is a nice neutral grey with some gradients and is a very good option. Restart eclipse and you should find a Dark Juno option under Preferences::General::Appearance. You could be running eclipse from any directory though, so which eclipse will tell you where it should go. In my case the command to do the copy was: cp. This lives next to the eclipse executable, not in your workspace or someplace like that. It has to be copied into your eclipse dropins folder. Rather than using that editor, you could install the pre-baked Dark Juno theme instead. Once you are done, some GUI surface area will show through the system theme as mentioned at the top of this post. If you want a dark one, go ahead and click away until eclipse is dark. This plugin gives you a GUI editor for the chrome colour scheme. The second stage is darkening the chrome of the UI, which is all the widgets and menus and everything outside of the child window canvases. They explain how to install their themes very well ( ), although you get a fine set of dark themes with the default plugin install and may not need to come back to their website for any more. My favourite editor theme is Vibrant Ink with the Monaco font. That can be done with the Eclipse Colour Theme plugin ( ). The first is to change the appearance of what is inside the editor windows. One solution which (mostly) work is the Eclipse Chrome Theme (compatible Juno 4.2 and even Kepler 4.3), from the GitHub project eclipse-themes, by Jeeeyul Lee. It seems the solution below don't work well with Eclipse Juno 4.2 and Windows 8, according to Lennart in the comments. Plug-ins can contribute extensions to this theme to style their own specific views and editors to match the window theme. You can enable it from the General > Appearance preference page. This popular community theme demonstrates the power of the underlying Eclipse 4 styling engine. Syntax highlighting has also been improved to take advantage of the new look.Ī new dark window theme has been introduced. The theme extends to more than just the Widgets. Now, 10 years later, an entirely new Dark Theme is launching. When Eclipse 3.0 shipped in 2004 it brought a new look to the workbench. Dark theme works well with Eclipse 4.5 onward with Windows 10.Īs mentioned din " Dark Theme, Top Eclipse Luna Feature #5", Eclipse 4.4 (Luna) has a dark theme included in it (see informatik01's comment): This is where the achievement will happen.Ī number of Tortured Souls will spawn on the outskirts of the room, they look like the banshee models. They will try to move towards the boss and you will need organized handling of them to perform the achievement without wiping. One soul needs to be marked out as the CC soul. The others must be killed, as having only two or three of them reach the boss may be enough to wipe the group. The CC'd soul must be rooted, stunned, slowed, snared, pushed back or anything else you can do to prevent the soul from touching the boss. After around 40ish seconds the Tortured Soul will turn into a Frustrated Soul (I don't think there's any raid alert for this, it simply turns red and grows slightly larger, so keep an eye on it).Īt this point you need to kill it as quick as you can, as it will still try to reach the boss. After the Frustrated Soul is dead, burn the boss down like normal and the achievement is complete.Īfter Notes: Long-term Roots or CC make this achievement very easy. So long as you make sure to get the soul you have marked for CC locked down and burn down the rest of the souls, the achievement doesn't take much. "Defeat Illysanna Ravencrest without killing any of her allies in Black Rook Hold on Mythic difficulty" Druids and Mages make the achievement very easy, but it's already a fairly easy achievement to begin with. Optimal Setup Two Tanks, One Healer, Two DPS. While the mechanics of the achievement are simple, pulling it off might be a little hard depending on your group set up. As the achievement describes, you just need to kill Gender Bent Illidan without killing any of the adds she summons. As far as I can tell, she summons the adds once her energy bar reaches 100, so it's very much worth it to pop any major DPS cooldowns you have on her right away and zerg her health as low as you can get it before the adds even join the fight. Once the adds are out, you have no choice but to either have someone tank them away from the group or carefully avoid using AoE and cleaves, as the adds don't have a very large health pool. She summons one melee add with around 11 million health and oine mage add with around 9 million health. But if you wanted to, you could make a giant one by doing 1 1/2 times the recipe and cooking it in a wide mug or ramekin, which will make it come out looking like a giant cinnamon roll (like the one in the close-up photos and background). This cake does take a little more effort than a regular mug cake because you have to do the cinnamon sugar swirl and the frosting, but it comes out so pretty and it’s well worth the effort.įor the recipe below, I deliberately kept it small since there’s so much sugar and calories in the cinnamon swirl and frosting. Until then, I’m trying to get as much of my summer to-do list done as possible this month. But maybe once I have kids I’ll be looking forward to school starting as soon as possible. It must suck to start school in early August when the weather is still so nice and everyone is still in summer mode. Growing up in NY, Labor Day signified the end of the summer and the start of school. Even though I’ve been in California for more than a decade, it still is mind-boggling to me that school starts in August. My feed has been filled with “first day of school” stuff. Add rest of cake batter, sprinkle rest of sugar mixture on top, swirl the dough with a knife. I especially love how the cinnamon swirls separate pieces of cake, just like they do for cinnamon rolls, so you can actually pull this apart and eat it with your hands if you wanted to. Sprinkle half over half the batter in pan. I’m pretty excited with how this mug cake turned out. Its cinnamon roll meets cake in an easy mug cake form. Earthy flavors of Saigon cinnamon spiraled into a delicate cake, sprinkled with a spiced crumble. This single serving microwave cinnamon roll mug cake has cinnamon swirls mixed throughout a fluffy cinnamon flavored cake. We'll remind them when useful but better start learning them early on. With each paycheck, we put aside some money in each of these accounts.įor instance, back when my eldest child started Sunday school at our synagogue, we received a bill for his tuition for the first year. These are generally the irregular bills that we have to pay each year. My husband and I refer to this as our mid-level savings. In addition to our “envelopes” savings account, my husband and I also have a number of high yield savings accounts. I personally keep track of how much goes into each “envelope” (we don’t separate them out in the bank account, just in my Excel spreadsheet), so I know how much we have to spend in each “envelope.” High Yield Savings Accounts Twice a month, we make a deposit into the savings account for the full amount that we would otherwise be putting into cash envelopes. That’s why I decided to simply make the savings account in our home bank into an “envelopes” account. I would then have to take the cash out of the envelope, deposit it back in the bank, and then pay the credit card with that money. That’s because we would often forget to take the cash with us when we went out, which meant we would use our credit card to pay. However, after several years of dutifully filling envelopes with cash, my husband and I found that we were causing ourselves–and by that I mean me–more work. It got us in the habit of setting money aside with each paycheck for regular and irregular expenses. When we first got married, Dave Ramsey’s cash envelopes helped us tame our finances and end many of our money arguments. This portion of our budgeting system hearkens back to when we used to follow the Dave Ramsey cash envelope system. Whenever I receive a paycheck, I enter it into our spreadsheet. Some of my clients pay on the first of the month, some pay on the 15th, and some pay upon receipt of my work. Income 2, which is my freelancing income, tends to be much more variable and will often come throughout the month. I include that FSA reimbursement as part of my husband’s income each month. Sometimes the FSA money comes in within the same week as my husband’s paycheck, as it did in August, and sometimes it comes the following week. We receive a (very) partial reimbursement for his pre-school fees twice a month from our FSA. We also set money aside in a Flexible Spending Account to help pay for our four-year-old son’s preschool care. When his paycheck clears, I type in the amount in the corresponding week. My husband (Income 1) gets paid on the 1st and 15th of the month. This is the simplest part of filling out our spreadsheet. Now let’s take a look at each individual component of my tracking: Household Income After a few months of this habit, we had to decide whether to scale back our dining out spending, or increase that budget–or both. Between getting lunches at work, going out to dinner together for dates or as a family, or getting pizza or takeout on evenings when neither of us feel like cooking, we have a tendency to blow through our dining out budget every month. We use this monthly check-in to make sure we are on the same page and to increase or decrease any spending categories that might need it.įor instance, we tend to overspend in the dining out category every month. With the help of my husband, who uses Excel a great deal for work, I have set up the following spreadsheet to track our family’s income, savings, investments, and expenses:ĭuring the first week of each month, I print off the previous month’s page so that my husband and I can look over and discuss our finances. So without further ado, here is a breakdown of the system I use.Įditor’s note: even with all of the cool budgeting tools available today, the vast majority of my Masters of Money guests use(d) some type of modified Excel spreadsheet to track expenses or budget ( just like I did). I mentioned to PT on our podcast conversation that I have an Excel spreadsheet that I use to keep tabs on every penny that passes through our family’s coffers, and he suggested I explain my system. So, it should come as no surprise that the detail-oriented piggy-bank counter has grown up to use a pretty complex system for keeping track of my household budget. As a small child, I used to empty my piggy bank, count everything that was inside, and put it all back in, feeling pretty good about my net worth as an 8-year-old. |
